Jeff Bezos Acquires $68 Million Island Mansion in Miami’s ‘Billionaire Bunker’ Enclave, Joining Elite Circles of the Super Affluent
August 11, 2023Jeff Bezos, the visionary behind Amazon.com and one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, continues to broaden his real estate portfolio. He recently secured a remarkable $68 million estate on Indian Creek, a meticulously crafted barrier island in the greater Miami region. The acquisition was disclosed by an individual knowledgeable about the transaction.
The expansive property, spanning 2.8 acres (1.1 hectares), encompasses a three-bedroom residence built in 1965. It was previously owned by MTM Star International, a company linked to Panama. While public records confirm the sale transpired in June, the identity of the ultimate buyer remained undisclosed. Notably, the last recorded sale before this was in 1982, at a significantly lower price of $1.4 million.
Despite numerous requests for comment, representatives for Bezos remained silent on the matter. Sources indicate that Bezos, aged 59, is actively exploring additional regional acquisitions.
Indian Creek, often called the “Billionaire Bunker,” boasts exclusivity and has attracted notable residents such as Carl Icahn, Tom Brady, Jared Kushner, and Ivanka Trump.
Bezos has amassed a series of prestigious homes in recent times, including properties in Washington, D.C., a sprawling nine-acre mansion in Beverly Hills acquired for $165 million in 2020, and an estate in Maui. His real estate holdings also encompass residences in Manhattan and Seattle and a sprawling 300,000-acre ranch in Texas, which houses the launch site for Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket.
Since stepping down as Amazon’s CEO in 2021 and following his separation from former spouse MacKenzie Scott, Bezos’ expenditures on opulent assets have surged. Among these lavish possessions is his superyacht, the Koru, one of the world’s costliest vessels, estimated to have been constructed at a staggering $500 million.
The newly acquired Indian Creek property, as indicated by property records, spans approximately 9,300 square feet (864 square meters) and features a private pool.
With a fortune estimated at $163 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Bezos instantly becomes one of Indian Creek’s most affluent residents. The island has around 40 residences, a country club, and even its police department.
Real estate values in the region, particularly in the upscale Miami area, have surged significantly in recent years, fueled partly by the influx of some of the world’s wealthiest individuals. Ken Griffin, Dan Loeb, and Josh Harris are among those who have invested in luxurious waterfront Miami Beach mansions since the onset of the pandemic.
For Bezos, this acquisition marks a homecoming, as he spent high-school years in Miami following his stepfather’s job move to Florida. His family also holds properties in Coral Gables and Miami Beach.
Bezos has also been a visible presence in the area, attending events such as the Miami Grand Prix party in May and being spotted with his now-fiancée, Lauren Sanchez, during that weekend.
